Abstract

This paper attempts to assess Stuart Hall's encoding/ decoding model which emerged from his famous article titled "Encoding/ decoding". This model has been both valued and criticized by researchers such as D. Morley and J. W. Lewis. In particular, they noticed that his model redembled traditional models of communication. However, Hall himself responded to their criticism in an interview on his encoding / decoding model. In this paper, we will consider these criticisms as well as the response by the author. In addition, following P.Pillai and J.D. Slack, this article discusses that there is a tension between the reliance on the earlier models and an articulated model of communication, and furthermore, it states that the latter can overcome several limitations of the encoding / model.
