Abstract

On 8 February 2004, the Australian Government concluded negotiations for FTA with the US Government. It caused some Australians deep anxiety about ensuring local contents in Australian broadcasting and audiovisual services. Local content rules have been very important to protect Australian culture from foreign TV programs. In this paper, firstly the process to the conclusion of FTA between Australia and US was reviewed, secondly the impact of FTA on local content rules in Australia was examined by some data, thirdly how local content rules should be in digital era was considered through several points of view. Finally the broadcasting policy in the media convergent environment was viewed.
