Abstract: In this paper, I endeavor to introduced and justify my dissertation research into possible connections between spirituality and language education. I begin by asserting that spirituality, however defined, is basic to our identities as language teachers, and that ignoring it is detrimental to teachers and learners alike. I then demonstrate that there is a yawning gap in the Second Language Education (SLE) literature vis-à-vis spirituality and language teaching. My purpose in penning this study was not only to begin to fill this gap, but to hold that my inquiry could be significant for future SLE research and practice. I close by outlining what I view to be important difference between spirituality and organized religion.
