Abstract: A study on resources available in local communities in Nagasaki have for field work programs was conducted to lay the groundwork for developing a set of programs focused on enhancing communicative skills of students as well as extending and/or deepening their knowledge of the local communities. Tsushima City, Shimabara City and Hirado City were selected as the sites of the research. These three cities have plenty of resources for teaching history and tourism. They also offer diverse opportunities for students to observe tourism or experience interaction with tourists. Transportation availability will be one of the important factors in deciding the location of a program. Further research with pilot programs is needed to assess the educational value of the programs designed in collaboration with the local communities.
